Project Thessalonica....

Good Afternoon Brethren,

I hope and pray all is well back home.  We are continuing to do well down here and are thankful for all that the Lord has done so far.  Some days there are trials and temptations, but the Lord has lead us through them all.  Sometimes you just want to pack it all up and come home, but then you realize that there is no peace nor happiness outside of the Lord's will.  Thank you again to all who pray and have given to support us as we try to do the Lord's will here in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.  The need is great and the battle is real!  May we all stay in the fight till the Lord returns or calls us home!
There is a reason why I wrote "Project Thessalonica" in the subject line.  Below you will find a link to "Project Thessalonica," this is a project being done by The Bible Baptist Church in Deland, FL (Pastor James Knox).  It is amazing how the Lord has already answered some of their prayers for the project.  Please, if you have some time, read what they are trying to do and pray.  Maybe the Lord would lead you to help in some way!  The time is short, what is done for the Lord is the only thing that will last for eternity.

Country Music?

I hope and pray all is well back home.  We are doing well down here and thank the Lord everyone has been healthy.  In the last few days we have received a lot of rain.  With this there has been an increase of mosquitoes.  Please pray that we will stay healthy and will not get any fevers that can be passed through their bites.

I receive emails from Brother David Cloud (Word of LIfe Ministries) and I thought that this was a pretty good article on Country Music.  It was written by Brother Jeff Royal and I have posted it below.  If you have anytime it would be a good article to read.

Music is a very important part of most people’s lives, and a quick scan of the radio dial reveals what people are listening to. Rock /rap/pop music dominate the airwaves, therefore many Christians are turning to a new venue--Country music.

Country music has hit the big time. It “has become the most popular radio format in America, reaching 77.3 million adults--almost 40 percent of the adult population--every week. Since 1989, country record sales have nearly doubled from $921 million to over $1.758 billion” (http://www.roughstock.com/history/garthnew.html).

Is Country music a viable alternative to the secular, worldly mainstream music of our day?

My concern is that a steady dose of Country music will not help you in your daily walk with the Lord, but it will actually hinder and ultimately weaken you.

Consider some song lyrics and information that will help shed light on the spiritual and moral dangers of this music.

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton has been a key figure in Country music for 40 plus years. Her first label was Goldband back in 1957. The following lyrics are from her album “Something Special” titled  “Speakin Of The Devil”:

This is very typical of Country music. Country takes a flippant, whimsical view when it comes to the Bible, Jesus Christ and the Devil. The Bible makes it clear that the devil is our adversary and sin is horrible that it nailed God’s Son to the cross.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh
about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet. 5:8).

Dolly Parton in her album, “Halos and Horns,” covers the heavy metal band Led Zepplin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” Here’s what Dolly had to say about the song:

 “I was scared to death to send it to Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. They sent word back that it was fine and they loved it. In fact, Robert Plant said he’d always thought of it as a spiritual song, and he was thrilled we’d used a choir on it, because he thought about that, too. If they like it, that’s most important to me. But I do hope the public will accept it too. I even hope they love it. (http://www.dolly.net/cutbycut.htm).

Dolly also performed the John Lennon song “Imagine” on her 2005 album called “Those Were The Days.” Here are the lyrics:

Country music is no doubt a much sought after commodity, but at what expense to the listener. The Bible clearly points out the fallacies of following such things.

Psalms 5:5  “The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.”

Proverbs 9:6  “Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.”

Proverbs 18:2  “A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.”

Tanya Tucker

Tanya Tucker has a song called “Texas When I Die” that basically talks about loving Texas more than heaven. In I John, God gives us a much different story.

1 John 2:15  “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

We should heed these strong warnings from God’s Word and not take them lightly. Groups like the Kendalls have been around for years. This song came out in 1977. Sin is such a serious thing with God. Many in Country music have an almost nonchalant, lackadaisical view of sin, but God Almighty sees it so seriously that He sent His only begotten Son to die for it.

John 3:16-17  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

James 1:15  “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

George Jones

These are just a few examples of George Jones who many consider the father of Country music. Many performers today list George Jones as their greatest influence and the reason they are in Country music today.

George Jones as many in country has done several “gospel” albums. Here are some of them.

Many country singers have no problem going from gospel to secular and back again. One more example from George Jones is his song “Honky Tonk Myself to Death”

These songs pretty much sum up what Country music is today. Living a shallow and weak “Christian” life is good enough and there seems to be little desire if any to live a godly, faithful Christian life.

FORNICATION AND ADULTERY

As we have seen, the sensual pleasure of sex outside of holy matrimony is a major theme of Country music. If it feels good and the two parties agree, it is O.K. “Nothin’ wrong with a little livin’.”

This is the devil’s lie. God’s Word issues powerful warnings against fornication and adultery. Not only does it have major consequences in this life, but it also has eternal consequences. Fornication will not be “our little secret,” because God sees all things, and His Word warns, “be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).

“So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent. Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house. But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts” (Proverbs 6:29-35).

This gives a crystal clear look at the character of Country music and how drinking is glorified. Some of the songs and musicians go back to the 50' and 60's. Only the Lord knows how many Country music fans have committed violent acts, estranged their children and friends, committed fornication and adultery, destroyed their marriages, crashed their vehicles, ruined their health, died before their time, and lost their souls -- all because of “drinking.”

Consider some examples:

“Whiskey River” by Willie Nelson (1973)

“Whiskey River take my mind / Don't let her mem'ry torture me. / Whiskey River, don't run dry / You're all I've got, take care of me."

“Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks (1990)

“I've got friends in low places / Where the whiskey drowns / And the beer chases my blues away / And I'll be OK.”

“Alcohol” by Brad Paisley (2005)

“Since the day I left Milwaukee / Lynchburg, Bordeaux, France / Been makin' the bars lots of big money / And helpin' white people dance.” [The song is sun from the perspective of a bottle of booze.]

“All My Rowdy Friends” by Hank Williams, Jr. (1984)

“Do you wanna drink? / Do ya wanna party? / ... I cooked a pig in the ground, we got some beer on ice / And all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight.”

“Pop a Top” by Alan Jackson (Under the Influence album, 1999)

“Pop a top again / I think I'll have another round / Sit 'em up, my friend / Then I'll be gone and you can let some other fool sit down.”

“I Gotta Get Drunk” by George Jones, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson (1970)

“A lot of doctors tell me / That I'd better start slowing it down / But there's more old drunks than there are old doctors / So I guess we'd better have another round.”

“Six Pack Summer” by Phil Vassar (2000)

“Got the ultra-ray wraparound sunglass vision / Got the sails up, iced down, a cool ambition / Just to relax and let the six-pack summer roll.”

“Get Drunk and Be Somebody” by Toby Keith (2003)

Keith also wrote “I Love This Bar,” “Whiskey Girl,” and “Beer for My Horses.”

“Chug-aLug” by Roger Miller (1964)

“Sumpin' like I ain't never seen / And I'm just going on 15 / But with the help of my finaglin' uncle I get snuck in / For my first taste of sin.”

“Beer in Mexico” by Kenny Chesney (2005)

"Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico / Do my best to waste another day / Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico / Let the warm air melt these blues away.”

“Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett (1977)

“There's booze in the blender / And soon it will render / That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.”

“Killin’ Time” by Clint Black (1989)

“If I did the things I oughta / You still would not be mine / So I'll keep a tight grip on the bottle / Gettin' loose and killin' time.”

“It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere,” by Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett (2003)

“Pour me something' tall and strong / Make it a hurricane before I go insane / It's only half past twelve / But I don't care / It's five o'clock somewhere.”

“Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again” (Proverbs 23:29-35).

CONCLUSION

I could have cited many more examples, but I think this is sufficient. I have no animosity towards anyone within Country music or anyone else for that matter. I think most people would agree that today’s Country music has changed drastically from the old country and western music. Today’s Country music has a thin veneer of wholesomeness about it, but in reality it’s laced with worldly themes, pushing the envelope whenever it can.

I know that it had a very powerful influence on my life and while was listening to country my relationship with my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ suffered. I’m convinced Country music played a part in distancing me from the Lord. I never want to go back to those days.

We’re all sinners who need a Savior. None of us merit God’s favor and forgiveness, but by His grace and regeneration through salvation, we are acceptable in His sight. True Christianity is not trying to “live the Christian life.” It is being born again and living a new life by the power of the indwelling Spirit. Jesus said that those who are not born again or converted will not see the kingdom of heaven. The reason so many country singers and listeners seem to hang between “amazing grace and hell” is that they have not been saved. They might have prayed a prayer and been baptized; they might have been raised in a Christian home; they might go to church; but they have not been converted and therefore they have no power to live for Christ. The Bible warns about those who have a “profession” without the “possession.”

Matthew 18:3  Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

John 3:3  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

Titus 1:16  They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

1 John 2:4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

The “grace” preached through Country music is not the grace described in the Bible. A grace that allows Saturday night fornication and Sunday morning offering taking is not the true grace of Christ.

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:11-13).

My concern is that many Christians are listening to Country music as an alternative to rock. While not all Country music is like the examples I citied, Country music does have the power to weaken a Christian’s testimony and render us unfit to serve the Lord as we are called to do.

My admonition to those that read this is to be on guard against ALL forms of worldly music. Ask the Lord for discernment.

For those that read this that aren’t saved, my plea is and my desire is for you to be saved today. Here are some verses that will help you to understand how to become a Christian.

John 3:3  “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Romans 3:10  As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Romans 3:23-24  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Romans 10:9-11  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Psalms 2:11  “Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.”

I hope and pray all is well.  We have been doing well down here.  I aplogize for not having many posts this month, but both of our computers have decided to give us some problems.  I have to send the computer that my home church got me back to the States for repairs.  Our other computer decided to go crazy this morning.  Thank the Lord though, that he has provided a way for us to be able to purchase another computer, which should be here on July 5th.  Until then I will not be able to put any photos of our visit with the Bassano's on the blog.

During the first week of June, we had the Bassano family visit us from our home church.  We had a wonderful time and our thankful to have such wonderful friends!  It was nice to be able to sit down and just laugh and talk with the brethren.  The Bassano family were a true blessing and we are thankful that they had the opportunity to come down and visit.

Café Festival in Polo

This past Saturday we were able to go to the local CafĂ© Festival here in Polo, Barahona.  Many people come from all over the country to participate in its activities held from June 3-5.   The Bassano family, from our home church, helped us hand out some tracts.  We also had some helpers from the church here in Polo.  Brother Moises and Brother Davey, along with 10-15 children helped in the effort.  I believe that we probably handed out close to 400-500 tracts at this Festival.  Please pray that the Lord will deal with the hearts of those that received tracts.  Below are a few pictures taken at the Festival:

Music....

I think that this is an excellent article on Rock Music and its influence on churches.  This article is an excerpt from the book The God of End-Times Mysticism by David Cloud.  Brother Cloud has some excellent books and articles on music and the influence of the "so called" worship music in today's Christian churches.  There is great danger in today's Contemporary Christian Music.  There was a time in my life, before I was saved, when I used to listen to Contemporary Christian Music.  But at the same time, I also had a collection of worldly music.  I guarantee that most Christians who listen to CCM, also listen to worldly music.  I believe when I was willing to give up my music, the CCM and my worldly CD's, that this is when the Lord started to deal with me concerning my spiritual condition.  Music is a powerful tool and the Devil is a master at using it to deceive the multitudes.  Please take some time to read the entire article.


“[Rock music] is THE STRONGEST DRUG IN THE WORLD” (Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Rock Beat, Spring 1987, p. 23).

The following is an excerpt from our new book The God of End-Times Mysticism:

I believe that rock & roll is the most effective form of mysticism operating in modern society. It is the sound track for end-times apostasy and Mystery Babylon.

It is not surprising that rock & roll has been adapted for contemporary Christian worship because it has the power that contemporary worshippers are looking for, the power to create strong emotional experiences, the power literally to take control of you and to carry you into spiritual realms. 

Rock & rollers have long described their music in glowing spiritual and religious terms, but the spiritual fervor described in the following quotes does not pertain to the Spirit of God; it pertains to the “god of this world” who masquerades as an angel of light (2 Cor. 4:4; 11:14).

Rock historian Michael Moynihan says: “In spiritual terms MUSIC IS A MAGICAL OPERATION, A VEHICLE FOR MAN TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE GODS” (Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground, p. 1). 

Craig Chaquico of the Jefferson Airplane says, “Rock concerts are the churches of today. Music puts them on a spiritual plane. All music is God” (Dan and Steve Peters, Why Knock Rock? p. 96).

Jimi Hendrix understood the power of rock & roll as mysticism:

“Rock music is more than music, IT’S LIKE CHURCH” (Jimi Hendrix, The Dick Cavett Show, July 21, 1969).

 “We’re making the music into ELECTRIC CHURCH MUSIC, A NEW KIND OF BIBLE you can carry in your hearts” (Jimi Hendrix, quoted in Crosstown Traffic by Charles Murray, p. 161).

“... THE MUSIC IS A SPIRITUAL THING of its own” (Jimi Hendrix, interview with Robin Richman “An Infinity of Jimis,” Life magazine, Oct. 3, 1969).

“ATMOSPHERES ARE GOING TO COME THROUGH MUSIC, because the music is a spiritual thing of its own ... you hypnotize people to where they go right back to their natural state ... The idea is to release in the proper form. Then they’ll feel like going into another world, a clearer world. The music flows from the air; that’s why I CONNECT WITH A SPIRIT, and when they come down off THIS NATURAL HIGH, they see clearer, feel different things...” (Jimmy Hendrix, rock star, Life, Oct. 3, 1969, p. 74).

Bruce Springsteen used to open his concerts with these words: “WELCOME TO THE FIRST CHURCH OF THE ROCK, BROTHERS AND SISTERS” and has stated that he was dead until rock and roll changed his life. USA Today described a Springsteen concert in these words: “Displaying an awesome musical chemistry, Springsteen and his E Streeters at times turned the Meadowlands’ Continental Airlines Arena [in East Rutherford, New Jersey] into a raucous revival tent, playing off themes of redemption, salvation and resurrection via rock ‘n’ roll throughout the nearly three-hour show” (USA Today, July 19, 1999, p. 9D).

Robbie Kreiger, guitarist for the Doors, said the band members were “revivalists and WANTED OUR AUDIENCE TO UNDERGO A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE” (Break on Through: The Life and Death of Jim Morrison, p. 190).

Remembering Bob Marley’s rock concerts, Judy Mowatt, one of his backup singers said: “ON TOUR THE SHOWS WERE LIKE CHURCH; Bob delivering the sermon. There were mixed emotions in the audience: you see people literally crying, people in a frenzy, on A SPIRITUAL HIGH ... These concerts were powerful and HIGHLY SPIRITUAL. There was A POWER THAT PULLED YOU there. It was a clean feeling ... For months and maybe years it stays with you” (Sean Dolan, Bob Marley, p. 95).

Grateful Dead concerts have been described as “A PLACE TO WORSHIP.” “The band was the high priest, the audience the congregation, the songs the liturgy, and the dancing the prayer” (Gary Greenberg, Not Fade Away: The Online World Remembers Jerry Garcia, p. 42). 

A music reviewer described a Backstreet Boys concert as “worship” (Express Writer, August 16, 1998). 

Jim Morrison of the Doors said, “I FEEL SPIRITUAL UP THERE PERFORMING” (Newsweek, Nov. 6, 1967, p. 101). 

Michael Jackson said, “On many an occasion WHEN I AM DANCING, I HAVE FELT TOUCHED BY SOMETHING SACRED. In those moments, I felt my spirit soar, and become one with everything that exists” (Steve Turner, Hungry for Heaven, p. 12). 

George Harrison said, “Through the music you reach the spiritual. MUSIC IS VERY INVOLVED WITH THE SPIRITUAL, as we know from the Hare Krishna mantra” (Turner, p. 71).

Brian Eno says that WHEN HE DISCOVERED ROCK AND ROLL, IT WAS “A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE” to him and IT OCCUPIED THE RELIGIOUS PART OF HIS LIFE (Turner, Hungry for Heaven, p. 150). 

Sting, of the rock band Police, said, “The pure essence of music is very spiritual” (Musician, Feb. 1987, p. 41). He says: “MY RELIGION WOULD BE MUSIC, AND I HAD JUST RECEIVED MY FIRST SACRAMENT [WHEN HE FIRST HEARD THE BEATLES AT AGE 11]” (USA Today, Jan. 27, 1984, p. 2D).

Dancing at raves “may be construed as the method by which ravers WORSHIP THE GOD OF ALTERED CONSCIOUSNESS” (Russell Newcombe, The Guardian, Jul. 22, 1995).

A fan of Andrew WK testified: “Andrew WK truly helped me let go. HIS SHOWS WERE LIKE CHURCH SERVICES, I felt rejuvinized, and for weeks following them I was happier and made people around me happier (which in turn made me feel even better)” (Andrew WK Paradigm Shift, http://www.dontstopthenoise.com/josh.html). 

Rock My Religion is a documentary by Dan Graham that describes the nature of rock & roll as religion to multitudes of people.

The memorial to John Lennon in Central Park, across the street from the Dakota building where he was murdered, has heavy religious overtones. A steady stream of fans place flowers and other offerings on the monument, which is inscribed with the title of his song “Imagine.” 

What is it about rock & roll that has produced such spiritual fervor? What is the mysticism in rock? 

It is a combination of the heavy sensual syncopation and the “me first” philosophy.

The most mystical element of rock, though, is not the lyrics; it is the music itself. 

“What is undeniable about rock is its hypnotic power. It has gripped millions of young people around the world and transformed their lives” (William Schafer, Rock Music, 1972, p. 79).

“Rock music is an ideal vehicle for individual or mass hypnosis” (Andrew Salter, cited in Pop Goes the Gospel, p. 20).

“Rock music in particular has been demonstrated to be both powerful and addictive, as well as capable of producing a subtle form of hypnosis in which the subject, though not completely under trance, is still in a highly suggestive state” (John Fuller, Are the Kids All Right? 1981).

Atmospheres are going to come through music, because the music is a spiritual thing of its own ... you hypnotize people ... I connect with a spirit, and when they come down off this natural high, they see clearer, feel different things...” (Jimi Hendrix, Life, Oct. 3, 1969, p. 74).

“An incessant beat does erode a sense of responsibility in much the same way as alcohol does. ... You feel in the grip of a relentless stream of sound to which something very basic and primitive in the human nature responds” (David Winter, New Singer, New Song).

“Heavy rock is body music designed to bypass your brain and with an unrelenting brutality induce a frenzied state amongst the audience” (Dave Roberts, Buzz columnist, Christian rock magazine in Britain, April 1982).

“Don’t listen to the words, it’s the music that has its own message. ... I’ve been stoned on the music many times” (Timothy Leary, New Age guru and promoter of LSD, Politics of Ecstasy).

“[Rock music] is THE STRONGEST DRUG IN THE WORLD” (Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Rock Beat, Spring 1987, p. 23).

“Rock ‘n’ roll is like a drug. When you’re singing and playing rock ‘n’ roll, you’re on the leading edge of yourself. ... It’s like there’s somethin’ alive and exposed” (Neil Young, cited by Mickey Hart, Spirit into Sound). 

Janis Joplin, who died young from the rock & roll lifestyle, describes her first big concert in these words: “I couldn’t believe it, all that rhythm and power. I got stoned just feeling it, like IT WAS THE BEST DOPE IN THE WORLD. It was SO SENSUAL, so vibrant, loud, crazy” (Joel Dreyfuss, “Janis Joplin Followed the Script,” Wichita Eagle, Oct. 6, 1970, p. 7A).

Another element of mysticism in rock & roll mysticism is the widespread use of drugs. In this connection consider Aldous Huxley (1874-1963). 

Huxley was a British-born mystic who believed that he was enlightened through drug usage. As a young man he “discarded dogmatic religion altogether” (Anne Bancroft, Twentieth-Century Mystics and Sages, p. 8). He leapt from one mystical path to another “like a grasshopper.” He studied hypnosis, psychic phenomena, meditation, automatic writing, and other things, but he was particularly drawn to Hinduism and Buddhism. In 1925 he visited India. He knew J. Krishnamurti and Swami Prabhavananda. 

In the 1930s, while studying Vedantic Hinduism under the direction of Gerald Heard, the founder of Trabusco College in California, Huxley wrote The Perennial Philosophy. In this he discussed the teachings of various mystics and described his religious views at that time. He said they were based “on direct experience,” which is the mystical approach. But it was in 1952 when Huxley claimed to have finally achieved enlightenment. This was through the ingestion of mescaline. He said that this experience cleansed the “doors of perception.” He continued to use drugs, including LSD, to the end of his life. On his deathbed his wife gave him LSD and sat beside him reading the very occultic Tibetan Book of the Dead.

In his books The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell, Huxley described his drug experiences in terms of spiritual enlightenment. He thought that the brain acted as a filter or a “reducing valve” that did not allow man to readily connect with the “mind at large.” Through drugs, yoga, and ascetic practices the brain’s filtering function was weakened, allowing the individual to tap into the “truth.” 

Huxley has had a great influence on rock & roll and on the modern world at large. The 60s rock group The Doors were named after his theory. They, too, used music and drugs as a door to “another world,” to “break on through to the other side.” The band’s lead singer, Jim Morrison, was described as an electric shaman. One of the band members said:

“When the Siberian shaman gets ready to go into his trance, all the villagers get together... and play whatever instruments they have to send him off. …  It was the same way with The Doors when we played in concert... I think that our drug experience let us get into it... [the trance state] quicker” (Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, cited by Jerry Hopkins and Daniel Sugerman, No One Here Gets out Alive, pp. 158-60). 

Rock & roll has been intimately association with end-times mysticism since its inception. To think that Satan is not behind the modern pop music craze is to reject the plain teaching of the Bible which says that the devil is “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4) and the “spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2) and the power behind the “mystery of iniquity” that is working in the world (2 Thessalonians 2:6-10).
